There are 650,000 registered sex offenders in America – and that number grows by about 25,000 every year. Wouldn’t you like to know if any of them are living in your neighborhood?Now you can!
In PerryGeo , Matt Perry has written an interesting article that questions the basis upon which such a service relies: mainly, its sources and the fear as a selling argument . And as he is a GIS person, he also shows the lack of precision of the maps produced and its consequences.

Hans Rosling, expert suédois en statistique et médecine, est le promoteur très efficace de Gapminder, une intéressante interface de production de statistiques animées, récement rachetée par Google... Son graphisme assez rudimentaire rends peu justice à la finesse de ses critères et à la justesse de ses choix, mais c’est accessoire. Après avoir essayé le système, il faut voir Monsieur Rosling commenter live avec exhaltation les chiffres évoluants simultanément année par année aux très branchées conférences Ted de Monterey (BMW-powered). Et voir comment en 2006 puis en 2007 il insiste avec une vigueur communicative et visuelle sur les articulations sensibles des données qu’il manipule est plutôt ravigorant ! Irrésistible et bien sur culte.

On sunday the 16th of September Constant organises an Open Street Map event in Brussels. We will collect GPS tracks in the center of Brussels and upload them to the database of Openstreetmap.org. A warm welcome to everyone who wants to help walk, cycle and help us upload and anotate the traces. We aim to tackle the whole pentagon of Brussels, if we don’t make it in one day, we’ll continue some other day. We will provide coffee, tea and a warm hangout.

A dense paper that tackles many important themes for a subjective collective cartography: data collection from subjective perception of space, the comparison of subjective datasets, how to map them, which protocols to use, etc.
"In order to clearly understand the cognitive representations of the urban space, this paper presents an approach in three steps : identification, which highlights the importance of a place ; its location more or less exact which indicates the level of the individuals’spatial knowledge, and the description which specifies the significant attributes of these places for the interviewed individuals. In order to obtain comparable maps, a precise protocol is proposed for each step."
